Generating social media content with AI: 7 rules for platform-specific posts

AI can turn one topic into dozens of post drafts in minutes. The problem is not producing but producing something that works: texts with the same tone, the same length and the same "Exciting news!" opener wear an audience out. The seven rules below turn AI output into content that is specific to each platform and to your brand.

1. Ask for one version per platform, not one text

Each platform has its own language. Instagram carries the image, so text is short and rhythmic; LinkedIn must promise value in the first two lines and respect the "see more" cut; X carries one thought in 280 characters; WhatsApp and Telegram read like conversation. Asking an AI to "adapt this topic for 18 platforms" is different from "share this". A good tool does that adaptation for you.

2. Apply character limits at generation time

Learning about a limit at publish time is the most expensive mistake. Common limits (they can vary by account type):

PlatformText limitNote
X (Twitter)280 charactersLinks count as 23
Instagram2,200 charactersMax 30 hashtags
Facebook63,206 charactersOnly the first 2–3 lines show in practice
LinkedIn3,000 characters"See more" after about 210 characters
Threads500 characters
Bluesky300 characters
Mastodon500 charactersDepends on the server
TikTok2,200 charactersVideo only
Pinterest800 charactersTitle is a separate 100
YouTube5,000 characters (description)Title 100 characters
Telegram4,096 characters
Google Business Profile1,500 characters

When text exceeds a limit there are two options: stop publishing and wait for a person, or drop trailing hashtags and shorten the text to produce a platform-specific version automatically. The second keeps scheduled publishing on track.

3. Teach brand voice first, generate second

The main reason AI sounds artificial is that it does not know your brand. Before generating, give it a voice analysis extracted from your website and your best three posts, words you use and avoid, how you address people, your emoji policy and topics you avoid. This profile should apply automatically to every generation; re-explaining it every time is not sustainable.

4. Use hashtags as signal, not decoration

  • Instagram allows 30, but 5–10 focused hashtags outperform 30 generic ones.
  • Use the "first comment" feature to keep hashtags out of the caption.
  • On X and LinkedIn 1–3 hashtags are enough; more looks like spam.
  • Pin your brand hashtag to every post; keep campaign hashtags as saved collections.

5. Treat visuals separately from text

Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok and YouTube do not accept content without media. AI image generation helps, but without a defined palette and typography every image looks like a different brand. For Reels, having a script written and a video produced from your own images is far more original than stock footage.

6. Keep human approval in the process

AI drafts, people publish. If you work as a team, set up a multi-step approval flow (writer → editor → client) so unapproved content never enters the queue. Even alone, put a review step between "generate" and "publish"; generating in the morning and reading in the afternoon catches most mistakes.

7. Measure and feed results back

Track which tone, length and hour work better with pre-publish forecasts and post-publish numbers. Publishing A/B variants and picking the winner after a week ends the "I think this one is better" debate with data. Write winning patterns into the brand profile so the AI starts from them next time.

Short checklist

  • A separate version for each platform?
  • Character and hashtag limits applied at generation time?
  • Brand voice profile defined and applied automatically?
  • Media present for platforms that require it?
  • Human review before publishing?
  • Results measured and written back into the profile?

How sosmedyon implements these rules (platform-specific generation, automatic adaptation, brand voice learning, approval flows, A/B testing) is detailed on the features page.
